How Herniated Discs Heal, How to Help Them Heal

A herniated disc is the primary cause of sciatica pain and is often diagnosed on MRI.

When someone finds out they have a herniated disc they usually feel like they are going to have back problems or sciatica problems for the rest of their lives.

This is not the case. Herniated discs heal. The healing process is referred to as spontaneous resorption and is well documented in the medical literature. Below are links to several research papers that cover reabsorption of herniated lumbar discs.

Incidence of Spontaneous Resorption of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Meta-Analysis.

Lumbar disk herniation: MR imaging assessment of natural history in patients treated without surgery.

Incidence of Spontaneous Resorption of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Meta-Analysis.

The probability of spontaneous regression of lumbar herniated disc: a systematic review.

The predictive factors for the resorption of a lumbar disc herniation on plain MRI.

Can specific loading through exercise impart healing or regeneration of the intervertebral disc?

Proper movement work and loading of the disc facilitates the healing process.

Proper loading of the disc with the right exercise program reduces the likelihood of recurrent disc herniations.

So even if you have a herniated disc there is a good chance it will heal, around 67% of herniated discs reabsorb. If you know what type of movement and exercise work to do you can help the disc heal faster and stronger.

Having a herniated disc does NOT mean you’re going to have sciatica or back problems for the rest of your life.

The disc will heal, and you can help it heal by doing some very simple movement and exercise work.

One of the best exercises for herniated discs is described in the Get Sciatica Relief with the Right Exercise video.
