The best lower back stretches really aren’t stretches
Most people who have lower back pain think they need to stretch their lower backs. To reinforce this belief stretching the lower back often feels good while you’re doing it.
The problem is any pain relief you get usually doesn’t last. This is because the lower back seldom needs to be stretched. The areas directly above and below the lower back need to be stretched and mobilized. The lower back needs more stability, not more mobility. The thoracic spine and hips need more mobility. More mobility through the thoracic spine and hips means less force through your lower back. Less force through your lower back means less pain.
What you should do instead of lower back stretches
Do these three simple mobilization drills instead of lower back stretches. These mobilization drills improve thoracic spine and hip mobility. Improved movement in these areas decreases the loads through the lumbar spine. Less loading means less pain.
Quit doing direct lower back stretches and incorporate these drills instead. You should notice less lower back pain within one to two weeks of consistently completing these simple mobilizations.
